ST. CLOUD — The Riverland Community College baseball team is two wins away from the NJCAA World Series after it beat Rochester Community Technical College 6-1 and topped Itasca 8-0 in the Region 13 tournament in St. Cloud Thursday.
Riverland pitchers Connor Hurst, a freshman from Madison, Wis., and Ben Schaben, a freshman from Monticello, Minn., combined to allow just one earned run as they handed out zero walks in 14 total innings of work.
“Connor’s come a long way since the beginning of the year and not walking any one all day is huge,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “We played about as good as we have all year.”
Michael Knutson, a freshman from Jefferson, Wis., went 4-for-5 on the day with two doubles and two RBI.
The win clinches the Blue Devils’ fourth straight finish in the top-three of Region 13. RCC will play No. 1 seeded St. Cloud Tech. Friday at 2 p.m. with the winner of that game moving onto the title round and the loser going to an elimination game.
