WINONA – A total of eight area athletes qualified for the Class ‘A’ state track and field meet at the Section 1A meet at Paul Giel Field in Winona Thursday.

Blooming Prairie senior Gabe Kartes reached a season’s best distance in the triple jump as he hit 43 feet, 2.25 inches to take first and earn his first career trip to the state meet.

The Grand Meadow-LeRoy-Ostrander-Southland girls track and field team will be sending seven athletes to state as Elizabeth May took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.71 seconds, McKenzie Kirtz, a freshman took second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:16.90, Hanson, a junior, took second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.78 seconds and sophomore Morgan Schmitz took second in the discus.

The 4 x 200-meter relay team of Sydney Bendtsen, May, Addison Tapp and Betsy Oswald cut a full second off its preliminary time as it took second and the 4 x 400-meter relay team of Bendtsen, Hanson, Oswald and May took nearly two seconds off their prelim time as they took second.

The Class ‘A’ state track and field meet will be held in Hamline University in St. Paul next Friday and Saturday.
