Farm to School initiative showcasing documentary at Fairgrounds

A screening and discussion of the new documentary, “Farm to School: Growing Our Future,” will take place 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, May 21, at the Mower County Fairgrounds (4-H building, 700 12th St. SW).

The Farm to School initiative serves local foods in schools, teaches students about the food they eat, and grows local economies.

Farm to School connects schools with nearby farmers, so schools can buy fresh fruits,

vegetables and other foods directly from local farmers. Such initiatives have increased young people’s consumption of fresh produce and boosted local economies. During the last

four years, these types of partnerships have increased more than 10-fold, but some fear signs the success is leveling off or even decreasing.

The 30-minute TV documentary was produced as a partnership between University of

Minnesota Extension, the Minnesota Department of Health and Twin Cities Public Television, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
