Record-breaker comes on the third attempt

Austin’s Abby Snater took a step past last year Tuesday when she broke her own record in the pole vault on the way to claiming first in the event.

It took Snater three tries, but on the last try she cleared 11 feet, four inches, breaking her own school record of 11-03.

“It was pretty remarkable,” coach Nancy Jones said. “Her first attempt was the worst of the three, the second attempt was really close and the third attempt was really nice.”

In terms of progress, Snater’s vault Tuesday put her ahead of where she was last year.

“It’s exciting because last year it took until sections before hitting 11-03,” Jones said. “We’re only in April when she did it.”

As a team, Austin finished second with 75 points behind Rochester Century who finished with 80 points.

Faribault wrapped up the triangular with 31 points.

“I’m very happy,” Jones said. “In the field events girls have improved and we have good consistency.

“This is such a fun group of kids to work with. They work hard and care about how they perform.”

For the second meet in a row, Carolyn Hackel claimed two firsts in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes with times of 12.80 and 27.10 seconds respectively.

Rachel Quandt ran away with a first-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.47.

“I think I’ve dropped a few seconds,” Quandt said from previous times. “We’ve been working on three-stepping instead of four-stepping which has helped my time.”

Quandt’s time was her best on the year so far and is an indication of how close an under 18 second time is for all the hurdlers.

“It’s good,” Jones said. “At this point we’ve been working hard with the hurdlers to the three-step and Rachel has gotten there. Our goal for all the hurdlers is under 18 seconds.”

Madison Overby followed up her record-breaking day Saturday with a pair of wins in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Overby broke the school’s 3200-meter record Saturday with a time of 11:44.01.

Her time of 11:58.46 Tuesday was well off that pace, but it was still enough to take first nearly a full second ahead of teammate McKenzie Besel who logged a time of 12:42.95.

Overby was first in the 1600 with a time of 5:33.48.

In the 800-meter run, Haley Splinter took first with a time 2:33.45.

In the relays Austin claimed a couple of first place finishes including the team of Karyn Potach, Jerica Peterson, Rachel Needham and Annissa Zynda in the 4×800 with a time of 10:59.31 and the foursome of Potach, Splinter, Meredith Fritz and Alex Hansen in the 4×400.
