A rough first inning set the table for a 6-0 loss for the Austin Packers softball team at the hands of sixth-ranked Mankato West Tuesday.

Mankato got runners on the base paths quickly as collecting a walk, two singles and a double early on, but Austin pitcher Abby Ball settled down after that and kept Austin close.

“We played good defense, had zero errors,” said head coach Tina Strauss. “After the first inning we faced four batters a inning and that’s good for us.

“This was a good showing.”

Abby Ball was on the mound giving up nine hits, striking out two and allowing five walks.

Katelyn Joseph, Taylor Hackensmith and Sydney Murphy all collected a hit for Austin.

“We’re hoping by playing these tough teams early on prepares us for what’s to come,” Strauss said. “We’ve played well and we’re looking good and promising.”

Austin moves to 4-4 and will host Rochester John Marshall for a doubleheader on Thursday.
