AFTON, Minn. — The Washington County sheriff says a stray bullet traveled about a mile before it struck an 8-year-old girl in the leg outside an Afton church earlier this month.

Sheriff Bill Hutton says the girl was outside Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Afton when she was hit about 5 p.m. March 10.

The bullet struck the girl in the calf. She was taken to a hospital.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/GDZ4Fd) reports investigators believe two 20-year-old men were doing target practice on nearby private land at the time.

The men are cooperating with authorities. Ballistics testing is planned to determine whether one of their guns fired the stray bullet.

It’s unclear whether any charges would be filed against the men.
