Marie Adeline (Swelland) Grose, age 93, died on March 15, 2012, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.
Marie was born to Anna and Martin Swelland at their farm in Kanawha, Iowa. The family moved to a farm five miles east of Kenyon in 1921. Marie attended a country school through the eighth-grade, then Kenyon High School for four more years. She graduated in May 1937.
After graduation she worked at Shattuck School of Faribault in the food service until her marriage to Frederick Grose on June 28, 1941. Frederick and Marie lived on the Grose farm on Monkey Road west of Kenyon where they farmed with Frederick’s father Olai Grose. A son Charles was born in 1942, followed by David in 1944 and Kevin in 1950.
In 1950 the family moved to Austin where both Marie and Frederick were employed with the Austin Public School system. A daughter, Rochelle, was born in 1955 followed by a son Chad in 1957. Marie left her work in the school system to look after the family of five until the mid-1960s when she returned to work, as a nursing aide at an Austin nursing home until the mid-1970s.
Her children pursued a wide range of careers. Charles became a physician, David a professor of classics, Kevin a diplomat with the United Nations, Rochelle a medical technologist at the Mayo Clinic and Chad a business manager in Minneapolis with General Electric.
Marie enjoyed cooking and was famous for her breads, cakes and pastries, especially at Christmas time. She travelled with the family on holidays to northern Minnesota, South Dakota, Florida and North Carolina. She kept up with her family’s activities and was a regular correspondent with her children, who have lived and worked over the years in New York, Illinois, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, California, Texas, Iowa, Africa, Switzerland and Germany. Marie also greatly enjoyed her last seven years, when she moved into an assisted-living apartment at the Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick, in 1976 and her son David in 2004. She is survived by sons: Charles, Kevin and Chad and her daughter Rochelle (Grose) Hatleli, her son-in-law Robert Hatleli and daughter-in-law Rebecca (Spear) Grose; grandchildren Andrea Hatleli married to Jade Murphy, Jerod Hatleli, Matthew Grose, Lauren Grose; and great grandchildren Emerson and Declan Murphy.
Funeral services will be held on March 20, 2012, at Gol Lutheran Church in Kenyon at 2 p.m. Interment follows in Gol Cemetery at the Grose family plot. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Michaelson Funeral Home of Kenyon is handling arrangements.
