Packer wrestlers pick up first dual win

The Austin wrestling team made some key lineup moves to pick up its first dual win of the season when it edged out Mankato East 40-36 on the road Thursday.

Every wrestler heavier than 126 pounds wrestled up at least one weight class so the Packers (1-2 overall, 1-2 Big Nine) could cover all but one weight class.

“This was the kind of dual we needed right before the holiday break,” Austin head coach Bill Kinney said. “This was a hard-fought team victory for us.”

Austin’s Mitch Tebay moved up two spots to 195, where he pinned Lee Marxen for the match clinching win.

“We’ve been waiting for a dual when one or more of our upperwieghts could be relevant to the match outcome,” Kinney said. “This was it.”

Josh Maxfield had to cut weight to get to 113 pounds so the Packers could avoid a forfeit and he picked up a 10-5 win. Dylan Diekmann trailed his match 7-1 at 132 pounds, but he fought back to win 10-7.

Riley Grinstead won at 152 on an 11-2 decision.

“Mankato East gambled that they could beat Riley with a substitute,” Kinney said. “ This gamble never paid off.”
