Smitty’s Tavern will reopen — with a twist.

New owner Mike Madsen is reopening the bar Smitty’s Tavern as The New Smitty’s Tavern, and hopes to see his first customers by Dec. 1.

Madsen said the bar located at 105 11th St. SE won’t see major changes, but he hopes to attract a younger crowd along with former Smitty’s regulars. The New Smitty’s Tavern will have the bar essentials, like a variety of drinks, sandwiches and appetizers, a pool table, juke box and dart boards, but he will also add a karaoke machine, dinner specials and possibly even some live bands.

“It’s going to be fun,” Madsen said. “It will give customers a nice place to go. It will be a local, hometown bar.”

He said he has a lot of work to do before it’s ready, but said everything is coming along quickly.

Madsen hasn’t set the bar’s hours yet, but said they hope to be open on Sundays.

Madsen owned a bar in Winnebago, Minn., and said he had been looking to get back into the game when this opportunity came along.

“I didn’t know I’d miss it as bad as I did,” he said.

Smitty’s has been closed since January.
