Congratulations to Don Fox, Angie Goetz, Kathy Green and Greg Larson, who were elected to the Austin School Board on Tuesday.

Challenging times are ahead for the Austin Public Schools. Like members of every Minnesota school board, those in Austin must deal with never-ending budget issues and with meeting national test standards. Austin board members also face the particular challenges of increasing enrollment, a major upcoming construction project and finding a way to meet the challenges of relatively high poverty levels among the student population.

Being a school board member anywhere is not an easy job. It will be particularly challenging here for the next few years — so beyond congratulations, the four successful candidates are also due a vote of thanks for volunteering to undertake a difficult job.
