The decades-long tradition of rewarding elementary school students for fire safety continued at McDonald’s in Austin Friday afternoon.

Two students each from Banfield, Neveln, Pacelli, Southgate and Sumner elementaries won meals, T-shirts and prizes for their creative work on fire safety posters. Cade Connet, of Southgate Elementary, won the overall prize and will put his poster up against other winners from around the state.

Fire department officials and employees from McDonald’s joined in the fun, as they remember the tradition going on for at least 25 years now.

Fire Inspector Tim Hansen with the Austin Fire Department has been working with the program for about 10 years and said it’s a good way to get kids to remember fire safety.

“It’s amazing what they learn and what stays with them,” he said. He added, “It’s very rewarding to see that they pass that information along.”

Among Connet, Austin’s winners included Justin Miller, Renata Vaughn, Joey Mentel, Elana Gillen, Slava Kritzer, Rachel Christenson, Nick Dunlap, Alejadra Rodriguez Luna and Ellynn Vrieze.
