The Austin boys soccer team kept pace for most of the day against No. 9 ranked Rochester Lourdes, but it all slipped away in the last 12 minutes of the game at Art Hass Stadium Saturday.

The Eagles (8-2 overall) scored four times in that span and it began when Jack Convery had his 25-yard indirect kick deflect off an Austin player and bounce into the corner of the goal to give Lourdes a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute.

“Mentally, you think of that as being an own goal because it hits you before it goes in,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “We were playing so well before it went in and then it deflates you a little bit.”

Zach Hebl knocked in an indirect kick to make it 2-0 and Karl Krecke and Calvin Kim added goals for Lourdes.

Austin (3-3-3 overall) had just five shots on goal, but the looks they did get were good ones. Barush Terrazas had a shot stopped on a diving save by keeper Will Elder just six minutes into the game and Jake Hagen-Erickson had a couple of breakaway chances thwarted by Lourdes.

“We had some opportunites and they had theirs,” Levisen said. “We played right with them and we didn’t resort to just playing defense. We wanted to play our game.”

Colin Weisert had 13 saves for Austin, which may see the Eagles again in the Section 1A tournament.

“It lets us know we’ve got some work to do, but it also lets us know we can play with them when we want to,” Levisen said. “The season’s not done yet and they got this one; we’ll be ready for them if we get to play them again.”
