The Rebels (1-5 overall, 0-1 Three Rivers) had a chance to take the lead in the last game but they missed a serve with the score knotted at 24 and then they couldn’t return a hit on the deciding point of the fourth game.

“The last game came down to us making a couple of more mistakes than they did,” Southland head coach Angie Smith said. “It was a good game.”

The second game was tied at 19 when Kellie Shawback hammered down a point to give Southland the lead for good. Lindsey Bottema landed a set inside the back line to make it 22-19 and Jana Schammel served an ace to make it 23-19.

In the third game, Southland lost all of the momentum it had built by falling behind 13-4 early on.

“When they’re up, they’re so ecstatic and when they’re down, they’re struggling,” Smith said. “We played better overall and we were a totally different team from last week.”

No team led by more than three points in the last game of the night.
