The LeRoy/Ostrander football team snapped a 17-game losing streak when it beat Lyle/Pacelli 18-6 in Lyle Friday.

L/P’s only score came on a 51-yard Damien Haugen punt return in the first quarter that made it 6-0.

The L/O defense shut down the Athletics’ offense as it held them to one first down.

“Our boys played their heart out on defense,” L/O head coach Aaron Hungerholt said. “We took advantage of some of their mistakes and played pretty good.”

L/P tallied 61 yards of offense in head coach Reid Olson’s debut.

The Athletics (0-1 overall, 0-1 SEC) had a couple of punts go nowhere and they threw two interceptions.

“You can’t take anything away from LeRoy/Ostrander. They were physical and played hard,” Olson said. “But we had way too many plays where we shot ourselves in the foot.”

L/O (1-0 overall, 1-0 SEC) scored all three of its touchdowns on the ground as Lucas Roe ran in two scores and when Roe fumbled near the end zone, L/O quarterback Nate Bunne scooped it up and ran it in for a touchdown.

The Cardinals had just seven first downs.

“Our defense kept us in the game, but we couldn’t get them off the field,” Olson said.

With a young team, Hungerholt is glad to have something he can build on.

“We only have one senior and he’s hurt,” he said. “This is a huge for our young guys and we’ll see where we go from here.”
