The Riverland volleyball team almost pulled off its first win of the season, but it couldn’t finish the job in a 25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 19-25, 15-7 loss to Anoka-Ramsey in Riverland Gym Wednesday.

The Blue Devils (0-13 overall) won games three and four to force a deciding game, but they fell behind 7-1 to start the fifth game and couldn’t get back in it.

RCC got as close as 9-6, but Alexa Sanovia and Stephanie Wurzer put together back-to-back kills to help the Rams pull away.

“We really sparked and played together tonight,” RCC head coach Sara Heim said. “But we weren’t consistent and the team that made the least errors in each game came up with the win.”

Robin Arjes helped spur RCC’s come back when she served five straight points to make it 11-3 in the third game. The Rams battled back to take an 18-16 lead. But RCC took a 23-22 lead and Brittney Dahl, a Hayfield grad, served an ace to set up the game-winning point.

RCC led 23-19 late in the fourth game when Rebekah Aase came up with a block kill and Cassie Massberg served an ace to win the game.

Dahl finished with 21 assists and four aces.

“Brittney keeps the team moving with and she plays aggressive on offense,” Heim said. “She’s a great athlete and a great person.”

RCC once again struggled with serving errors, but the percentage was better than it had been in past matches.

“We have a lot of aggressive servers, but the errors are still outweighing our aces,” Heim said.

RCC stats: Cassie Massberg, 13 kills, 14 digs; Rebekah Aase, 8 kills, 6 blocks; Robin Arjes, 8 kills, 6 blocks; Brittney Dahl, 21 assists, 4 aces; Laura Hemann, 18 digs; Brooke Coughlin, 15 digs
