It’s going to be a quiet week at the YMCA for members, but a busy one for most staff.

The Austin YMCA will be closed from Aug. 20 to 28 for annually cleaning and repairs.

“It’s basically a week that gives us an opportunity every year to freshen up the place,” said Mark Bjorlie, executive director.

The closure allows YMCA staff to dig in for more extensive cleaning and renovations than would be possible with members still using the facilities.

“It’s the most efficient way to get the facility cleaned and repaired without them exercising smelling floor finish fumes,” Bjorlie said.

Staff will replace pieces of flooring in the gymnasium, along with springs and floorboards in the gymnastics areas. The pool will be drained for repairs, and staff will change filters in the spas and do other routine painting and work.

New LCD television screens will be installed in the fitness equipment room.

Staff uses the week to clean up their offices and throw away out-dated files.

The YMCA won’t be entirely closed, though. The front desk will be open from about 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. to give out information and take in membership.

Bjorlie thanks members for their understanding.

“We appreciate our member’s understanding during this time,” he said.
