Rose Creek ready to party

It’s all about the music when it comes to festivities in Rose Creek. Well, and kickball, too.

For several years, Rose Creek’s Fun Days, a three-day festival, has been the destination for popular bands. With strong performances by Hairball and Johnny Holmes, Creek Club Coordinator Dean Bendtsen hopes this year’s bands will continue the rockin’.

On Friday, July 8, Smokescreen will kick things off. Then, on Saturday, the up-and-coming Pop Rocks will hit the stage with a different blend of music, from ’80s to old-school hip hop.

“(Pop Rocks) are not as well-known, but we’re thinking once people see them, they’re going to develop their own name,” Bendtsen said.

Local band Amish Playboyz will open for Pop Rocks.

Yet music isn’t the only popular attraction. There’s plenty of games for kids and adults, and one of the big draws is the kickball tournament.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, roughly 20 teams will square off in what used to be an elementary sport. Bendtsen said the kickball tournament, which has been going seven years strong, may draw more than 400 spectators.

According to Bendtsen, the tournament came about as a fluke, too. But now it’s a staple to the event.

“It was just a total mistake,” he said. “It was a filler, but it worked out so we kept it.”

For a town that has fewer than 400 people, Rose Creek Fun Days draws in a crowd much bigger than the city. Each year, it remains one of Mower’s most popular summer bashes.

“People just keep coming back,” Bendtsen said.

Another popular event is the beanbag tournament. Though most towns have beanbag tournaments, Rose Creek’s may have been the first in the area, as it started roughly 10 years ago.
