A 29-year-old Austin man was arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly threatening a woman with a knife.

Jose Alfonso Francis Avelar was taken into custody around 2:20 a.m. after the woman called the police from a nearby party. Police Chief Brian Krueger said the woman and two children walked from Avelar’s house at 710 10th Ave. SE to a residence in the 700 block of Eighth Ave. SE.

The woman told police Avelar had threatened her with a knife. She gave the knife to officers to put into evidence. The size of the knife is unknown.

When police arrived at Avelar’s home, he denied threatening anyone. He had been drinking, according to a police report.

Krueger said Avelar could be charged with second-degree assault, fifth-degree domestic assault and terroristic threats. Formal charges are pending with the county attorney’s office.
