The Lansing Post Office received a special delivery Tuesday.

During a special meeting at 10 a.m., the county board agreed to renew the lease on the post office to help keep the location open.

“We would like to see that postal service in Lansing is uninterrupted,” said Commissioner Ray Tucker.

Last Tuesday, the board voted down the lease, largely due to concerns about the county’s liability. New owner Dave Thompson had lawyers prepare an agreement that eliminates all the county’s legal liability of holding the lease.

County Attorney Kristen Nelsen, who previously said the document contains serious risks for the county, was pleased with the agreement for Thompson to assume the liability.

“I think it adequately protects the county’s interests,” Nelsen said.

Chairman Tim Gabrielson agreed the document addressed all issues.

“It seemed to answer all the questions that I had,” he said.

Because Lansing isn’t an incorporated city, Commissioner Jerry Reinartz noted the town will likely be included into the city of Austin’s mail system without a post office.

“The problem with Lansing is losing their post office would be losing their identity,” Reinartz said.
