The Austin softball team had its season come to an end in a 4-2 loss to Winona in the first round of the Section 1AAA tournament in Rochester Thursday.

The Winhawks (9-12 overall) scored three runs in the bottom of the first as the Packers (5-14 overall) struggled early.

Austin had a chance to take the lead in the fifth, but it couldn’t convert a bunt that would’ve put runners on second and third for Marie Clennon, who was two-for-three on the day.

“We would’ve had a chance to tie it up if we get that bunt down,” Austin head coach Tina Strauss said.

Liz Gerhart struck out after missing on the bunt and Lindsey Miller was caught stealing to end the fifth.

The bright note for Austin was that it committed just one error.

“It was a our best defensive showing of the season and it’s nice to end it on that note,” Strauss said.
