The Southland baseball team survived a scare from No. 8 seeded Lyle/Pacelli (6-11 overall) in a 5-2 win in the first round of the Section 1A West Division baseball tournament in Adams Tuesday.
Southland’s No. 9 hitter Lee Klockner came up big as he knocked in two runs with a double in the fifth and he drove in two more runs with a single in the sixth.
“Before the game I told them that we have a great opportunity here again tonight to knock off another team and we had them on the edge of their seats pretty much through the whole game,” L/P head coach Dan Zielke said. “We showed that we came to play and we weren’t going to let them just have it. We’ve got a lot to look forward to in the future and we’ll be a competitive team here next year.”
L/P eighth grader Jonah Rohne held the top-seeded Rebels (16-5 overall) to just six hits and he struck out five.
“It’s hard to give a loss to Jonah tonight,” Zielke said. “He really did a nice job of mixing up his pitches and keeping his composure.”
Southland will host No. 4 Kenyon/Wanamingo (13-8 overall) Thursday at 5 p.m.
