Materials from a landmark that powered downtown Austin will soon go up for auction.

Austin Utilities will hold a public auction at its Downtown Power Plant at 10 a.m. June 14. The auction will start be held onsite and online to liquidate equipment from the power plant.

The plant, located at 419 Fourth Ave. NE, was once capable of producing 31 Megawatts of power. Recently, the plant and equipment have reached an inefficiency level and age that is not economically viable to operate. The Capacity Purchase Agreement between Austin Utilities and Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (SMMPA) was terminated Dec. 31, 2009.

A feasibility study deemed the units uneconomical to operate. Austin Utilities’ decision to retire and decommission the plant came after months of planning for the future of the plant.

Austin Utilities will maintain the 5 Megawatt combustion turbine located in the plant as an emergency response unit.

The auction will be conducted by Stuart B. Millner & Associates.

Information on the auction can be found on Stuart B. Millner & Associates website located at www.sbmac.com or contact the utility for a complete list of equipment.
