The weather cleared Saturday afternoon and the Spring Fling was filled with family fun. Kids enjoyed playing games, meeting American Red Cross mascot “Ernie the ERV,” learning about choking emergencies and CPR, and checking out the fire truck and police car.

Red Cross instructor Juan Felix demonstrated choking response and CPR to parents and children. Many parents shared with Felix their lack of knowledge about how to respond when faced with a life threatening emergency. He allayed their fears with clear direction and hands on experience.

The two hour event was intended to help families become more familiar with the services of the Red Cross and to leave with information about how to be prepared for emergencies. In addition to the CPR and choking demonstrations, information was distributed regarding renters insurance.

The event was a great success due to the contributions of many volunteers, the Austin Fire and Police departments and Jeff Baldus. I would also like to thank our sponsors, the Noon Kiwanis Club and Hy-Vee.
