Blue Devils knocked out of Regional Tournament

The Riverland baseball team couldn’t keep its season alive as it dropped a pair of games at the Regional tournament in St. Cloud Sunday.

The Blue Devils lost 6-1 to Rochester in the semifinals and fell 4-2 to St. Cloud Tech in an elimination game.

RCC (31-14 overall) committed eight errors and had just nine hits between the two games. All of St. Cloud’s runs were unearned and RCTC scored four unearned runs.

“As good as we played in the first couple of days, we played that poorly today,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “It was really frustrating to lose to Rochester and it was very tough to get up (for St. Cloud) when we had to play right after an emotional loss.”

RCC was set to play RCTC on Saturday, but due to rain the games were delayed to Sunday.

“I wish we wouldn’t have had that rain day because we were playing great and then we had a lot of sitting around for a day,” Koenigs said.

The Blue Devil bats were never able to get going as they struggled throughout the day.

“I thought the pitching we saw was OK,” Koenigs said. “We didn’t do a very good job and we didn’t come to the plate with a plan.”

The losses snap RCC’s two-year streak of playing in the Division III NJCAA World Series.

“It was a good season, but it’s difficult to have it end this way,” Koenigs said.
