The Lyle/Pacelli baseball team pulled off its biggest upset in years when it upended Randolph (13-3 overall), the No. 3 ranked team in Class ‘A’, by a score of 7-4 on the road Friday.

The Athletics (6-9 overall) scored six runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead and the game was called with one out in the bottom of the sixth due to rain when the bat flew out of a Randolph hitter’s hands on a swing.

L/P eighth grader Jonah Rohne picked up the win as he allowed just two earned runs.

“We got a gem tonight out of Jonah Rohne,” L/P head coach Dan Zielke said. “I was a little hesitant putting him out there against such a potent team like Randolph, but he showed no emotion out on the mound tonight and just pitched his heart out. He did a good job of keeping the ball down and getting some nice ground ball outs.”

L/P had just four hits on a rain-soaked night, but they took advantage of their opportunities.

“We took advantage of their errors and walks and just kept the momentum alive,” Zielke said. “It was a fun game to watch and a good win for the guys to take with them down the stretch here.”
