It’s two games into the season and the Austin baseball team is still looking for its offense.

After getting one hit in their opener, the Packers (0-2 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) tallied just two hits in a 13-0 loss to Winona in five innings at Dick Seltz Field Tuesday.

Sophomore catcher Gabe Kasak was two-for-two with two singles and the rest of the squad went hitless, while striking out five times.

“Two hits are not going to get it done,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins said. “I don’t know why we were swinging through some of those pitches. It was mostly fast balls and he didn’t throw a lot else for strikes.”

Winona (3-1 overall, 3-1 Big Nine) didn’t waste any time getting on the board as it hit two homers in the first to take a 3-0 lead and it tacked on seven more runs off of seven hits in the third inning to go up 10-0.

“You’ve got to give Winona credit,” Watkins said. “They came out and hit the ball right from the beginning and they hit it well.”

Besides getting his team’s only hits, Kasak threw a runner out at third base in the top of the second inning for Austin.

“Gabe played hard the whole the game,” Watkins said. “He had a good game and we need more of that from everybody. It’s great to see a sophomore play like that and I hope the rest of our guys play that hard throughout the whole game.”

The Austin defense converted a triple play to get out of the top of the fifth when shorstop Jay Ettinger hauled in a line drive and flipped it to second baseban Caleb Wahlen, who fired to first for the third out.
