Austin’s pitchers were dominant for 13 of the 14 innings they pitched against Rochester Century in a softball doubleheader Saturday.
Even with a hiccup in the first game, the Packers still swept the Panthers 7-6 and 8-2 at Todd Park Saturday.
Austin’s Marie Clennon was cruising in the first game as she allowed just two hits and one run in the first six innings, but the Panthers (0-2 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) got to her in the top of the seventh and used six hits to score five runs which tied the game at six.
Austin took advantage of three Century errors to win the game in the bottom of the seventh as pinch runner Kallie Hart scored on a Panther error with two outs.
“I was too close for comfort and it was a little nerve racking, but I think we learned a good lesson,” Austin head coach Tina Strauss said. “You can never quit playing.”
Austin (2-1 overall, 2-1 Big Nine) cruised in the second game as Haley Underwood launched a two-run homer over the fence in the fourth inning.
Freshman pitcher Abbey Ball had a solid outing as she allowed just three hits, one walk and one run in seven innings.
“Abbey made them put it in play,” Strauss said. “She kept it low and made them ground out.”
