The Austin baseball team was outside for just the third day this season as it lost its season opener 8-0 at Faribault (2-0 overall, 2-0 Big Nine) Thursday.
Austin pitcher Luke Mallory allowed a lead-off homer to Jake Helgeson on an 0-2 high fast ball and he didn’t make it out of the first inning as he allowed six runs (four earned) in the first frame.
Jacob Thompson allowed just two runs in relief.
“Jacob did a good job of coming and giving us a chance,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins said.
The Packers (0-1 overall, 0-1 Big Nine) had just one player reach base as Marcus Stoulil, who went 1-for-2, doubled in the second inning.
“You could tell we hadn’t been outside much,” Watkins said. “We didn’t have many good at-bats and we didn’t hit the ball very hard. It’ll get better.”
