Austin high to host poetry night

While poetic musings often fill Austin High School’s halls, there are some students who will put on a performance like none other this coming Tuesday.

The sixth annual Eberhart Family Poetry night will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at AHS’s Eberhart Media Center. This year’s contest is a little different, however.

The top three students from each school will be reading the poetry that made them finalists in the competition, according to Amanda Bremner, Austin Public School’s gifted and talented coordinator.

“I wanted to give them an opportunity to have their poetry heard,” Bremner said. “(It will) give a little more recognition to the finalists as well.”

Students appear excited (and nervous) to perform their work.

“It was shocking to hear my name on the announcements,” said Hope Heimer, eighth-grader at Ellis Middle School.

Each student’s poem is original work that they composed by themselves. While students may not feel ready to be put on the stage, they enjoy having the recognition that comes with doing well.

“It feels good to know that people are going to read stuff you wrote, and be noticed,” said Allison Braaten, eighth-grader.
