A 20-year-old Austin man who allegedly choked a woman, tore at her eyelashes and snapped off several of her fingernails is in custody in Mower County jail.

Austin police arrested the man at taser-point around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The woman told police she had been sleeping in her home with her child when the man woke her up and asked if he could see her phone. When she gave it to him, he allegedly snapped it in half, pulled her up from the bed and began yanking on her hair.

He then allegedly tore at her eyelashes, snapped off several of her fingernails and choked her with one hand until she couldn’t breathe or swallow.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said the woman had marks around her neck, rug burns from a scuffle on the floor and scratches on her elbow.

The police report gave no indication that the man was intoxicated at the time of the alleged assault.

He is being held in Mower County jail pending formal charges, which will likely be felony domestic assault by strangulation and fourth-degree domestic assault, said Krueger.
