Nettie O. Thorson, 96, of Lake Mills, Iowa, formerly of Scarville, Iowa, died Friday, March 25, 2011, at the Lake Mills Care Center.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, with the Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday evening at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, IA, 50450, and again at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery Scarville, Iowa.
Nettie Opal Thorson was born March 23, 1915, the daughter of Nels and Agnes (Gulbertson) Bergland. She was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Leland. She attended country schools through the eighth grade.
On May 1, 1934, she married Selmer Thorson at the parsonage in Scarville. They farmed in the Scarville area all their lives. They had four children: Arden, Sharon, Roger and Nancy.
Nettie was a farmer’s wife and homemaker. She was active in her church, participating in circle, Ladies Aid and Altar Guild. After her family was grown, she loved to embroider, knit and make quilts. She also embroidered baptism towels for the church. She and Sam put together many puzzles, did latch hook rugs and tied quilts together. She made the most delicious apple and lemon pies. Her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.
She is survived by son, Arden (Delores) Thorson, and their children: Allen Thorson and Beth (Don) Flannery and grandchildren: Patty, Jessica and Michael Flannery; daughter, Sharon (Leroy) Brackey, and their children Natalie (Mike) Fell, Lois (Mike) Jamtgaard, Wayne Brackey, grandchildren: Joe, Samantha and Christopher Jamtgaard and Evan Fell, son, Roger Thorson and Lynn Kleveland, daughter, Nancy (Richard) Helland and their children: Matt (Blanca) Helland, Scott Helland and Amy (Shane) Taylor, grandchildren: Maya and Lily Day and Madeline Helland, Austin and Brody Taylor. She is also survived by sister, Thelma Hall, and brother, Arden Bergland; sisters-in-law: Gladys, Margaret, Pat and JoAnn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Sam Thorson; a granddaughter in infancy; her parents; sisters and brothers: Verna, Norma and Wilma, Ole, Helmer, Truman, Johnnie, Wallace and Marvin.
