Spartans beat Austin girls

It looked like Austin’s girls basketball team had solved Rochester Mayo’s threat early on, but the Spartans found another way to attack as they beat the Packers 72-51 in Ove Berven Gym Friday.
Mayo (14-6 overall, 12-2 Big Nine) came out crashing the boards as nine of its first 15 points came on second or third chances. The Packers (8-12 overall, 7-8 Big Nine) still stuck with the Spartans as they tied the game at 13 on a drive by Mary Kate Barinka and tied it at 15 on two free throws by Jenna Svoboda.
Austin rebounded better from that point on but it went over five minutes without scoring as Mayo tacked on six straight and the Spartans went on to lead 33-22 at the half. Austin didn’t get closer than eight the rest of the way.
Mayo broke the game open when point guard Ann Flesher, who finished with 16 points, started to knock down jumpers to compliment Rachel Doll, a 6-0 sophomore center who had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
“We were playing with them, but they’ve got so much size on us,” Austin head coach Gary Peterson said. “We can’t go man on man on them and then they started hitting shots on our zone. If the ball’s on our part of the zone it’s got to be like man-to-man. We’ve got to pressure the outside shot and we’re coming out to slow.”
Jenna Svoboda had 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists and Meredith Molhusen had 10 points and four rebounds for Austin.
