A 38-year-old man who was extricated from his vehicle Thursday afternoon following a car accident in an uncontrolled Austin intersection was over the legal limit.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said Simon Makauch was driving westbound around 2:30 p.m. Thursday on 12 Avenue Northwest when his sedan collided with a northbound F-150 truck on Sixth Avenue Northwest, driven by a 69-year-old man.

After the crash, Makauch attempted to back up from the scene, but hit another parked truck in the process, forcing him into a snowbank.

Austin Firefighters extricated Makauch, who was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to Austin Medical Center after complaints of upper torso pain. A blood test confirmed Makauch was over the legal limit of .08.

He was taken to Mower County Jail, where he was booked and immediately released. Makauch’s report has been forwarded to the city attorney’s office for appropriate charges.

Krueger said charges will be determined based on Makauch’s blood alcohol content.
