Minnesota West point guard Sam Lynn got the best of the Riverland women’s basketball team 90-65 in Riverland Gym Wednesday.
Lynn finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists as she kept the No. 9 ranked Lady Jays (19-3 overall, 7-1 MCAC South) rolling all night.
“They attack very well and that leads to a lot of easy buckets,” RCC head coach Suzy Hebrink said. “We have to shoot better on threes to stay with a team like that.”
The Blue Devils (12-9 overall, 2-5 MCAC South) shot just 39 percent from the field and 27 percent from the arc in the loss as West shot 51 percent from the field.
“We’re just not focused or intense enough. You can’t relax when you’re running back on defense against this team and we did that,” Hebrink said.
RCC was hurt by its lack of depth in the loss. Joni Lillo, a starting guard, played just 14 minutes before fouling out which left the Blue Devils a little thin in the backcourt.
“We needed her out there. That hurt us,” he said.
RCC held its last lead when Krissy Schemmel hit a three to make it 12-11 early in the first half and the Blue Devils pulled to within 45-40 early in the second half after Joni Lillo scored.
The Jays responded with a 12-3 run to put it out of reach.
Krista Viehauser, a sophomore forward from Austin, was selected co-player of the week for the Southern Division last week.
Viehauser had 25 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, two assists, and one block in just 25 minutes of action in a win over Fergus Falls last week.
