The Hayfield girls basketball team survived a late flurry of shots to beat Winona Cotter 36-35 on the road Tuesday.

Cotter (12-6 overall) missed three shots in the last 14 seconds before Hayfield finally pulled down a rebound as time expired. The Vikings (11-7 overall) were willing to allow the outside shot as they keyed on Micaela Trainor in the paint.

“They were looking for Trainor inside, but we surrounded her pretty good,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “It was a hard fought win and I guess God was on our side this time.”

Hayfield trailed 19-16 at the half, but it took the lead when Alyssa Selk, who scored 16 points, and Molly Streightiff both hit key threes in the last four minutes.

The Vikings’ defense stepped up as they swept the season series from Cotter.

“We played very good defense and we made them work for everything,” Kindschy said. “This was a big win, because Cotter is a tough place to play.”

Hayfield scoring: Alyssa Selk, 16; Abby Pollock, 7; Molly Streightiff, 5; McCayla Thoe, 4; Abby Blanchard, 3; Kelsey Severson, 1
