In a low scoring game, it was a defensive play that lifted the No. 9 seeded Grand Meadow girls basketball team to a 29-28 overtime win over No. 8 seeded Schaeffer Academy (7-13 overall) in a Subsection 1A East Division first round game Tuesday at Schaeffer.

Grand Meadow sophomore Audra Durhman stepped up and took a charge as time expired to seal the win for GM. Durhman finished with six points and 10 rebounds.

GM (6-18 overall) led by five with 36 seconds left in overtime but struggled to close it out. They also led by five with three minutes left of regulation.

“We took some shots that we didn’t need to take when we were ahead,” GM head coach Dawn Baudoin said. “But this is a good win, especially after two tough losses to Schaeffer and Lanesboro last week.”

GM guard Autumn Thorsen was held scoreless for the first time this season, but she found other ways to contribute.

“She played outstanding defense,” Baudoin said.

The game started slowly as neither team scored in the first eight minutes.

GM will play at No. 1 Spring Grove Friday at 7 p.m.

GM scoring: Cortney Olson, 10; Hillary Churchill, 8; Audra Durhman, 6; Syndey Richardson, 5
