ADAMS — After a struggling on offense in the first half, it looked the Southland girls basketball team had found its way.

Then the stretch run came.

The Rebels scored just two points in the last seven minutes as Chatfield rallied to beat them 60-57 in Adams Tuesday.

“We got over-anxious,” Southland head coach Bob Sheehan said. “It was an exciting, stressful game and we tried to do too many things that we shouldn’t have. We know better, but we started forcing things and then they started making some shots and we pressed a little.”

Chatfield (9-6 overall) scored the last five points of the game as Karen Sass hit all four of her free throws in the last two minutes and Erika LaPlante hit a free throw to make it 60-57 with nine seconds left.

Southland’s Jana Schammel had two three-point attempts that came up empty in the late seconds. First it looked like she drew contact but no foul was called and her second attempt was a fade-away from the wing that bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.

“We set it up for Jana and they played it well,” Sheehan said. “She got a decent shot off and we’ve practiced that play a lot.”

After trailing by four at the half, Southland (11-3 overall, 7-3 Three Rivers) led by as many as 10 in the second half. The Rebels led 55-48 with 8:18 left after Brandi Schammel scored on a post move, but they didn’t get a field goal the rest of the way and they made just two-of-seven free throws in the last eight minutes.

Karen Sass, a 5-7 junior guard, carried the Chatfield offense as she poured in 23 points, while grabbing nine rebounds.

“We were letting too much penetration into the middle and towards the end of the game we let (Sass) get the ball too often,” Sheehan said. “We ended up fouling her because she’s a good ball player.”

Southland had just two players in double figures scoring as Jana Schammel finished with 18 points and four assists and Brandi Schammel had 19 points and five rebounds.

While it’s tough to take a loss, Sheehan is hoping his team can take a lesson from it.

“We’ve had a pretty good run and sometimes you get a little complacent,” he said. “This is kind of an eye opener for us and it’ll definitely benefit us.”
