Parenting Resource Center to move

Parenting is sometimes about making the best out of a bad situation. The Parenting Resource Center is taking that to heart.

The PRC will be moving out of its current location underneath US Bank on North Main Street and starting Feb. 1 will be in the same building as the Seibel Center at the corner of First Street and First Avenue.

“We’re excited about it,” said Maryanne Law, director of the PRC.

The move will allow the PRC to use the money it pays in rent towards paying off the mortgage of the 105 building, which it owns and operates. The PRC will also be above ground for the first time since 1995.

The move isn’t entirely a good thing, however. The PRC is “being responsive to economic realities,” according to Law.

“We are dealing with some reduction in some contracts and some grant funding and the kind of thing that’s happened to all non-profits,” Law said.

That’s why the PRC’s board of directors voted for the move last November. That money would normally go towards paying rent will now go towards the mortgage the Seibel Center would normally pay, thus cutting costs and providing the PRC opportunities to continue and, in some cases, expand the services they run now.

“We’ve got a full plate,” Law said.

The move means the PRC’s on-site library will be closed from Jan. 26 through Feb. 1. All other services will continue through the moving period, Law said.
