Orlo Hovland, 87

Orlo Hovland, 87, a lifelong resident of Austin, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2011.

Orlo, son of Harald and Olga, worked for Hormel for 41 years, was a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division of the United States Army in World War II and volunteered countless hours at St. Edwards Church. An avid golfer much of his life, Orlo also enjoyed following the Minnesota Twins and other teams on television in his later years. He was a skilled amateur woodworker and especially enjoyed time with his children and grandchildren.

Preceded in death by brothers Emery (Ruth), David (Betty), and Dean (Marge). Survived by wife of 60 years Helen, son Jack (Annette), daughters Gail (Greg) and Jill, brothers George (Lorraine) and Nate (Gin) and sisters Marion Travetto, Nancy Vaughan and Deanna (Bill) LeBarron. Also survived by grandchildren Allison, Kerstin, Natalie and Nils. Orlo was a kind and gentle man who will be missed by everyone his life touched.

Memorial service at St. Edwards at 11 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 4, 2011. Interment with military rights by American Legion Post 91 at Calvary Cemetery. Family will greet friends at a luncheon following the service. Memorials to St. Edwards Catholic Church in Austin. Arrangements by Mayer Funeral Home.
