Isabelle Gilgenbach

Isabelle Gertrude Gilgenbach, 97, of Adams, died Thursday, Jan. 13.

She was born on Nov. 1, 1913, in Adams, to Joseph and Anna (Kloeckner) Retterath. She attended school in Meyer and Wapsi country in Iowa. On June 25, 1938, she married Francis J. Gilgenbach at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wapsi, Iowa. Isabelle worked in Austin and at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester before becoming a full-time homemaker on the family farm near Taopi. In 1979, Francis and Isabelle retired from farming and moved to Adams.

Isabelle enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, to whom she was known as “Grandma G.”

In her spare time, Isabelle enjoyed crocheting, quilting, sewing, gardening, bowling, fishing and playing cards. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and the Sacred Heart CCW.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Thomas Loomis officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday at the Adams Funeral Home from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Adams Funeral Home. There will be a 3 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. Prayer Service at the Adams Funeral Home on Sunday.

She is survived by her son and daughters-in-law: Dr. David and Karen Gilgenbach, Elk River, Minn., Barbara Gilgenbach, Adams; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and Gene Smith, Adams; Bernice and Allen Huseby, Rochester, Minn.; eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister: Marie Rauen, Adams; brother-in-law: Richard Badger, Rochester; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Francis, son Kenneth; twin grandsons, John and Michael Huseby; brothers, Alfred, Lawrence, and Paul Retterath; sisters, Marcella Winkels and Margaret Gerber.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Sacred Heart Catholic School or to the donor’s Choice.
