Caroline I. McVay, 70, of Hiawatha, Iowa and formerly of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Harrison, Ariz. and Afton, Iowa, died Saturday, Jan. 22, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Caroline I. McVay, daughter of Julian Charles McMullen and Florence Elaine (Thomas) McMullen, was born Jan. 19, 1941, in Austin. She grew up in Austin and attended school at the Pacelli Catholic School until the 11th grade and received her GED June 2, 1997. She met and married Robert M. Brimacomb in Austin on Oct. 12, 1957. They moved to the Cedar Falls/Waterloo, Iowa area where she was a homemaker and a waitress. To this union four children were born. Caroline and Robert were later divorced, and she later married Kerry (Bud) Conaway of Waterloo until his death in 1977. She then met and married John D. McVay of Waterloo. She worked at Waterloo Industries as an assembly technician and inspector for 23 years, retiring in 1998. Caroline and John moved to Harrison, Ariz., in 2000 and lived there until his death Oct. 12, 2007. Caroline then moved to the Afton/Arispe area, then to the Hiawatha Care Center in Hiawatha. Caroline’s hobbies included cooking, reading and spending time with family and friends

who were very special to her. Caroline was a member of the Eagles Lodge of Creston, Iowa, Buzz’s Bar Association of Waterloo, and the UAW Local no. 838 of Waterloo.

Survivors include: two daughters, Carol Brimacomb of Cedar Rapids and Diana (Bill) Patterson of Leeds, Ala.; son, Robert P. Brimacomb (Cheryl) of Cedar Falls; two step-daughters, Corina (Ryan) McVay of Independence, Mo. and Marsha Henderson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two step-sons, Kevin (Angie ) McVay of Cromwell, Iowa, and Brian (Leann) McVay of Bridgewater, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Sandra (Ralph) Howard of Austin; brother, Michael McMullen of Lake City; two brothers-in-law, Duane (Sharon) McVay of Rogers, Ariz. and Abe (Barb) McVay of Winterset, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Judy (Von) Tull and Beth (Jim) McGrath, both of Afton, Iowa.

Caroline was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John, in 2007; daughter, Karen Brimacomb; five brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Powers Funeral Home — junction of highways 34 and 25 in Creston. Pastor Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be at Moon Cemetery, south of Macksburg, Iowa. Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Memorials are to be sent to the family.
