The Austin wrestling team had three wrestlers take second place as the Packers took seventh out of eight teams at the Eden Prairie Invite Saturday.

Felten, who is now 15-4 at 103 pounds, beat Jake Price of Hopkins 11-8 in double overtime in the semifinals. Price was 20-1 coming into the match.

Russell, who is 11-4 at 112 pounds lost 4-2 in the finals to Ben Brancale of Eden Prairie, who is ranked No. 7 in Class ‘AAA.’

“Devon’s class had four outstanding kids in the bracket, so this was a nice placement for him,” Austin head coach Bill Kinney said. “Brennen really likes individual format tournaments and he seems to ramp up his intensity. He beat two quality wrestlers.”

Thomas Herrera, who is 10-9 at heavyweight, was pinned in the finals by Sam Brecount of Eden Prairie, who is ranked No. 10 in Class ‘AAA.’

Herrera beat Kyle Russell of Hopkins 6-1 in the semifinals.

“Thomas wrestled his best match of the year in the semifinals, and seems to be working up a nice head of steam entering the last month of the season,” Kinney said. “Our goal with Thomas is to heave him peaking at the end of the season. In the finals, Thomas was wrestling well when he got caught under his opponent and pinned.”

Three other Packers placed on Saturday as Erick Power took fourth at 119, Alex Amrich took fourth at 125, and Brandon Cotter took fifth at 130.

“We dropped many of our younger varsity starters into the JV portion of this tournament to give them a break from the varsity level competition,” Kinney said. “That move cost us a higher varsity team finish, but hopefully it will serve us well in the final month of the season. We had five JV tournament champions and one runner-up, so the kids were able to get some positive time on the mat.”
