The Spamtown Belle will likely be making waves on East Side Lake come spring, pending approval from the City Council.

Richard Nordin, captain of the Belle, said Gary and Pat Ray have yet again provided funding for the boat to operate next year. The Rays donated $1,500 toward the operation of the boat for 2010.

The Spamtown Belle, which previously operated on Mill Pond and began operating on East Side Lake last year, carried a total of 821 people during the 2010 season, according to Nordin.

In a letter sent to the City Council, Nordin said the boat ran 17 weekends and was rained out seven times. Thirty-four percent of riders were from out of town, with some riders even coming from Germany and Austria. A total of 17 different states were represented over the course of the operating season.

The $1,500 donation from the Rays last year, coupled with rider fees, makes for a total of $3,119 in revenue for the Belle, with expenses totaling $3,176.

The council will likely vote whether to keep the boat in operation at its next meeting, which is Dec. 20.

“(The Spamtown Belle) is a very unique treasure that our community is very fortunate to have available,” Nordin said in the letter.
