MINNEAPOLIS  — Winter has just officially begun, and Minneapolis already has declared five snow emergencies — the city’s most ever before Christmas.

One more snow emergency and Minneapolis will have tied the record for six snow emergencies in an entire season, set in 2000-2001.

Even during the season of the historic Halloween blizzard of 1991, only four snow emergencies were declared in Minneapolis — and all of those happened before Dec. 31.

More than 28 inches of snow have fallen on the Twin Cities so far this month. That makes it the area’s third snowiest December on record.
