The Lyle/Pacelli girls basketball team couldn’t hang on to a late advantage in a 49-46 loss to Glenville/Emmons in Pacelli Gym Tuesday.

The Athletics (0-1 overall, 0-1 SEC) led by five with two minutes to go, but with five players fouled out, they weren’t able to hold on.

“We had a lot of people out there without experience and instead of shooting free throws, we were turning the ball over,” L/P head coach Brad Walter said.

L/P also missed 19 free throws and struggled with turnovers, but Walter thinks the team will be better off next time they’re in a close game. It was the first varsity game for senior Nyabang Diang, who led L/P with 24 points.

“We played good, but we let one slip away from us,” he said. “I think if we’re in a game like this in January, we’ll win it. We have a few new players out there right now who are still adjusting.”

L/P scoring: Nyabang Diang, 24; Ann Rysavy, 13; Klara Schaferhoff, 7; Madison Truckenmiller, 5; Maggie Lewison, 5; Dani Felten, 3; Courtney Walter, 3; free throws: 37 percent (11-for-30)
