After retiring John continued to give of himself and his time; his heart was always open and his hands were always willing. He began volunteering at Kaiser Hospital in January of 1982. He worked volunteering in Pre-Op but he was best known for his work in the hospital gift shop. He continued to volunteer for 28 years working over 17,500 hours. His cash register always balanced to the penny and his regulars were always happy to see John smiling behind the counter.
