Saturday marked the 150th birthday of George A. Hormel, founder of Hormel Foods.

Hormel was born to German immigrants in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1887, at the age of 27, he moved to Austin and established a meatpacking business with Albrecht Friedrich. However, that was not the company that would become Hormel Foods.

The partnership made between Hormel and Friedrich dissolved, and shortly after, in 1891, Hormel established Geo A. Hormel and Company — or what we now know today as Hormel Foods.

During the company’s profit sharing event last month at the Austin plant, employees watched a video of the history of Hormel in honor of his 150th birthday.
