The Hayfield boys basketball team had two chances to win the game, but it came empty on both tries in a 64-63 overtime loss at Goodhue (4-2 overall) Friday.

Brady Kramer missed a half courter at the buzzer of overtime for Hayfield (4-1 overall) and Cole Kruger was called for carrying on a drive to the hoop at the end of regulation.

Bobbie Stephens also missed a three-pointer from the baseline late in the overtime that would’ve put his team up two.

“We had our chances but things don’t always go your way and tonight they didn’t,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “Bobbie had played all forty minutes and I think fatigue was probably a factor in his shot.”

Jared Dicke gave Goodhue the lead with 26 seconds left when he scored his only two points of the night.

Goodhue missed four straight free throws to set up Kramer’s half court attempt and the Wildcats missed 16 of 25 free throws on the night, while Hayfield hit 25 of 29 from the stripe. Hayfield senior Tyler Krekling scored 23 points, while hitting 16 of 18 from the line and he also had eight rebounds and four steals.

Hayfield senior Tyler Anderson, who finished with 15 points, twice tied the game for the Vikings in regulation as he converted a three-point play with 1:56 left and hit two free throws with 58 seconds left.

Ashton Erie carried Goodhue’s offense with 39 points.

“He’s so hard to guard, because he can go inside and outside,” Pack said. “It’s tough to stay with him for forty minutes.”
