The Austin wrestling team lost 37-36 at Rochester Century Thursday.

The Packers (0-2 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) had some dominant performances from their lighter wrestlers as Devon Felten (103), Braden Eggum (112) and Brennen Russell (119) all won with first period pins.

“We are making strides,” Austin head coach Bill Kinney said. “There were bright spots throughout the line-up tonight. The first three weights wrestled very aggressively tonight.”

It was the first career pin for Eggum, a freshman, and Christian Buttshaw, a junior, later picked up his first career pin at 215 pounds for the Packers. Pedro Ceballos won his first career match with a forfeit at 145.

Dylan Diekmann also picked up a first period pin at 135 for Austin.

“Dylan wrestled very well despite not feeling very well and Christian Buttshaw turned in a very gritty performance at 215,” Kinney said.

The toughest loss for Austin came at 152, where sophomore Michael Bednar was leading 12-4 late in the match but was pinned, leading to a 10-point swing in the Panthers’ favor.

“Michael had been in control throughout the match, and just got a little over aggressive. He will learn from this and get better,” Kinney said.
