ST. PAUL — A Minnesota woman is accused of using a wrench to punish her 7-year-old daughter.

A criminal complaint accuses the 39-year-old St. Paul mother of pinching her daughter’s ear so hard doctors say the girl will need plastic surgery to repair the damage. The complaint says Mai Neng Xiong (ZHONG) was angry her daughter had eaten some fruit she had just purchased.

A school nurse called police to report the girl’s injuries. She was treated at a St. Paul hospital on Nov. 11 and placed in foster care. Xiong is charged with malicious punishment of a child.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports Xiong was twice previously convicted of malicious punishment in Ramsey County and of child endangerment in Hennepin County. Xiong’s attorney did not immediately return a call for comment.
